Description:

This collage was created with Photopea, a platform for photo editing. Through the use of multiple layered images and stylistic text choices, the piece represents the discrimination society places on people facing homelessness. The phrase "Not in my backyard" is commonly used in campaigns to object to homeless people being in their neighborhoods. This image confronts this idea with the use of empathy. The text is written in a graffiti like font, bold and demanding, imitating the voices of people demanding for homeless people to be removed from neighborhoods. The homeless man that is fading into the background is appealing to pathos as he gazes emotionally in the distance. The transparent nature of the figure attempts to demonstrate the loss of identity and space for the homeless within society due to all of the stigma attached to homelessness. The main purpose and goal of the image is to encourage people to challenge their way of thinking regarding homelessness, looking at the issue with an open and human lens that considers the lives of those without a home. This also hopefully would encourage people to allow homeless shelters in their neighborhoods, donate to their local shelter, or even encourage local governments to change laws regarding these issues.
